Martin John James Hrutkay, 74, of Washington, passed away at noon Friday, April 9, 2021, from Covid complications.

He was born September 6, 1946, in Monessen, a son of the late John James and Jennie Capozza Hrutkay.

He was a 1965 graduate of the Bentleyville-Ellsworth Area Joint High School.

Mr. Hrutkay attended California State College for a short period of time and then enlisted in the Air Force in 1966, where he was a Senior Airman, E-4, with an honorable discharge. He was first stationed at Ft. Hueneme and later transferred to Edwards Air Force Base, he served in Michigan at the K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base and at Fort Buchanan, San Juan, Puerto Rico. He studied at the International Studies in San Juan, Puerto Rico and was a chemical engineer for the Air Force.

After the Air Force, he worked at the Monessen Coke Plant and later transferred to the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel’s Allenport Mill, where he retired in 2005.

He had a business degree from the Westmoreland Community College, he sold real estate and was an insurance salesman.

Mr. Hrutkay was a member of the Lone Pine Christian Church and he enjoyed playing trumpet for the Bentleyville Firemen’s Band, where they won several awards. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling and The Meadows. He was always telling jokes to put a smile on people’s faces.

He was formerly married to Diane Kronosky, with whom they had two children, Deanna (Justin) and their son Scott, and Nate Hrutkay and his children Jayme Brea, Keegan James and Caden.

In 1995, he married the love of his life, Joyce Jenkins Hrutkay, who survives. Also surviving are his sister Judy Basey (the late Nick) and their daughter, Stefanie King (Matt); many cousins and an uncle, Danny Capozza (Linda), who was like a brother to him.

May he forever rest in peace, beloved husband, father and grandfather.

Private services were held at the Lone Pine Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post 165, Bentleyville and the U.S. Air Force. A public memorial service will be announced at a later date.
