James W. McGuier, 93, of Prosperity, passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born October 7, 1927, in Washington County, a son of the late Raymond McGuier and Belva Loretta Dille McGuier Coffield.

Following his service in the U.S. Navy in World War II, Jim graduated from Claysville High School in 1947. It was at Claysville High School that he met his beloved wife, Ellen Lenore Mounts McGuier. They married May 30, 1951.

Jim worked as a vice president of Western Pennsylvania AgChoice Farm Credit from April, 1953 through December, 1988, which reflected his lifelong interest in farming and agricultural business.

He was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church, Prosperity, where he served for many years as a church elder, actively engaged in fundraising projects, and maintained mowing of the church lawn and cemetery. Jim was a past master of Claysville Masonic Lodge # 447, where he had been a member since 1953. He considered his affiliation with the Masonic Lodge to be an important part of his life. Additionally, Jim served during his lifetime on the Washington Hospital Board as well as the Washington County Fair Board.

Spending time with his family, running and maintaining the family farm and enjoying his grandchildren were his greatest joys in life. Jim coached community baseball teams for his sons and later he was an avid fan of his grandchildren’s baseball and softball teams throughout the years. He also enjoyed hunting, an activity that he shared with his friends, his sons and his grandsons. He will be remembered forever as the centerpiece of his family, his church and his community.

Surviving are his four children, Sue Ellen of Wheeling, W.Va., James Michael of Prosperity, Joel Raymond (Kelley) of East Finley and Jay Allen (Janet) of Taylorstown; five grandchildren, Matthew (Debbie), Andrew (Dr. Natalie), Dr. Devin (Dr. Elizabeth), Ian and Moriah; a brother, J. Riley Coffield of Washington; a sister, Ellen (Richard) Drosdick of Haltom City, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Lenore Mounts McGuier; a brother, Robert Lee McGuier; and sisters, Naomi Coffield Parker, Kathryn Ila Coffield Bell and Faye Ann Coffield Hess.
