Hugh Carey
Hugh “Buzz” Carey, 85, of Monongahela, died Tuesday, December 21, 2021, in the Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born October 25, 1936, in Avella, the son of Robert S. and Minnie Grace Mechling Carey.
Buzz graduated in 1954, from Ellsworth High School, and continued his education at the Penn Technical Institute in Pittsburgh.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Monongahela, where he was a former trustee and choir member.
He was a Korean War veteran, having served in the US Navy, where he also sang in the choir.
Buzz had been employed as a repairman at Hatfield’s Ferry Power Station in Masontown since 1970. He was later promoted to Maintenance Supervisor at West Penn Power Company’s Mitchell Power Station until his retirement.
He was a member of the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates, the Carroll Legion James C. Ford Post 949, Dunkirk and a 50 year member of the Charleroi Monongahela Lodge 337 F&AM.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Dougherty Carey, with whom he celebrated 44 years of marriage on June 6, 2021; two daughters, Terry Carey, of Eighty Four, Janice Hubbell, of Bentleyville; three stepchildren, Janice Applebee, of Monongahela, Pat Gregg, of Moon, Tom and wife Kay Applebee, of Hooper, Nebr.; five grandchildren, Tiffany and Cody Knetzer, twins, Chase and Chad Hubbell, Brandon Carey; four step-grandchildren, Ashley Kirby, Amy Villella, Jeffrey and Douglas Applebee; four great-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharlene McBride; stepson, Jeff Applebee; brother, Robert Carey; two sisters, Betty Myers and Sally McIllvaine.
Friends will be received from noon to 3 p.m. on Thursday, December 23, 2021, in the Frye Funeral Home, Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where services will follow at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Jude Urso officiating.
Entombment will be private in Mon Valley Memorial Park, Donora.
