John W. Mooney

John W. Mooney, 93, of Waynesburg, died Saturday, December 18, 2021, at Evergreen Assisted Living, Waynesburg.

He was born January 25, 1928, in Whiteley Township, Greene County, a son of the late William Stanford and Ida Rose Mooney.

John spent most of his life in Greene County. He was employed as a mechanic for PennDot, and later was a heavy equipment operator for Equitable Gas Company, retiring in 1990.

At one time he owned and operated the Mooney General Store & Gas Station in Kirby from the mid 1950’s to the mid 1960’s.

John was a life member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge #461, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #4793 and American Legion, Post #330, all of Waynesburg.

He was very proud to have served in the United States Navy as a Seabee during Word War II and the Korean War.

Surviving are two daughters, Julia (Gary) Moore, of Irwin, and Jacqueline Barnes, of Waynesburg; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Barnes, Rebekah Masone, and Dana Mastroianni; five great-grandchildren, Jess Barnes, Violet and Aaron Masone, and Juliet and Levi Mastroianni; and several nieces and nephews.

John was the last sibling of his immediate family, being preceded in death by three sisters, Alene Luzadder, Helen Husk and Mary Ann Filer; five brothers, James, Robert, Kenneth, Charles and William Mooney; also a daughter, Jennifer Rose Mooney.

The family would like to thank the staff of Evergreen Assisted Living for his care the last few months.

Private services are entrusted to the care of the Behm Funeral Home, 182 W. High Street, Waynesburg.
