Shirley Marie Anderson Neely

Shirley Marie Anderson Neely was born on August 2, 1940, in Springhill Township, Greene County, the fourth of six children born to the late Wilbur Anderson and Hazel Evelyn Stout.

She passed away in the early morning hours on Friday, December 17, 2021, along with her husband, John Allen Neely, in a tragic house fire at their home in Springhill Township, Greene County.

Shirley was a native of Greene County, graduating from Rogersville High School in 1958. Upon her marriage to John on May 21, 1960, she moved to Ohio, living in Barberton, Ohio and Hartville, Ohio, until coming back to Springhill Township, Greene County, when John retired in 1989.

Mrs. Neely was a home maker and loved gardening. She was adored by her three grandchildren. She was known for her outspokenness and was a devout Christian.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, and older brother, Kenneth Woodrow Anderson, on September 14, 1957; her sister, Vivian Rose Anderson Langston, on March 13, 2020; a daughter, Christina Marie Tenney, on January 2, 2016; paternal grandparents, Thomas James Anderson and Lillie Maud Pethtel; and maternal grandparents, Asa Ostin Sout and Ota Belle “Oaty” Gump.

She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Vicky Lynn Neely Soles (Rex), of Springhill Township; son-in-law, Jeremy Tenney of Uniontown; stepchildren, Carol Neely Patterson, of Littleton, W.Va., and Johnny Andrew Neely of Canton, Ohio; an older brother, Jerry Lee Anderson (Mary), of Greentown, Ohio; and two younger brothers, Gary Ray Anderson (Beverly), of Berkshire, N.Y., and Wilbur Thomas “Tommy” Anderson of Washington; three grandchildren, William Alan Soles, Hazel Gertrude Tenney, and Naomi Viola Tenney; seven step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

All services were private and were held at the convenience of the family. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery on Garrison Ridge.

The Tennant Funeral Home, Hundred W.Va., is in charge of arrangements.
