Martha Elizabeth Hughes
Martha Elizabeth “Marty” Hughes, 91, of Washington, died Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Woodside Presbyterian SeniorCare. She was of declining health with dementia and died of Covid-19.
She was born on February 23, 1929, in Washington, a daughter of the late William T. and Sarah Grace McCracken McDowell.
Martha graduated from Washington High School in the January Class of 1946. She then continued her education, graduating from Penn Commercial.
She was a secretary for Washington Steel before retiring from Tax Collector – City Treasurer’s Office.
On August 21, 1953, Martha married Herbert Dallas “Herky” Hughes, who died July 1, 2014.
Martha was a member of the Tuesday night Bowling League at Route 19 Bowl, the Moose Club, the Neighborhood Card Club, and a Cub Scout Den Mother.
Martha and her late husband Herky were avid travelers. They enjoyed cross country trips, traveling to Europe, Las Vegas, and cruises. She also enjoyed attending her granddaughter Stacy’s sporting events.
Martha and Herky enjoyed dancing and were well known for gracing the dance floor.
She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by sons, Larry (the late Meri) Hughes of Washington, and Cary (Amy) Hughes of Gibsonia; daughter, Jodi (the late Chuck) Derrow; grandchildren, Eva Hughes, Ethan Hughes and Stacy (Andy) Herrick; great-grandchildren, Abbey, Miles and Ella Herrick; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Martha is predeceased by brothers, Irwin “Duffy” McDowell, John McDowell; and sister, Malvina Mounts.
She attended the First Christian Church.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, all services are private.
