Dr. Phillip Lynn Hayes, 86, of California, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2021. Dr. Hayes was born May 31, 1935, in Clarksburg, W.Va., one of two sons of the late Lynn Alvin and Agnes Evelene Snodgrass Hayes.

Dr. Hayes was a graduate of Barrackville High School in Barrackville, W.Va. In addition to a Bachelor of Science in Secondary History Education from Fairmont State College in Fairmont, W.Va., he earned a Master of Science in Counseling and a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va.

After an exemplary career with the United States Marine Corps and Reserves, Dr. Hayes retired with the rank of major after 20 years of service.

Dr. Hayes began his tenure in higher education at West Virginia University Institute of Technology in Montgomery, W.VA., and completed a long and dedicated career as dean of student development at California University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Hayes also became the assistant coach of the Division I wrestling program for many years, at then, California State College. Upon his retirement in 1999, he was awarded the honor and title of Emeritus Faculty. Dr. Hayes was also a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Brownsville.

Dr. Hayes was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Frederick Lee Hayes of Barrackville, W.VA.; and a brother-in-law, John Richard Fleming of Home.

Memories will be cherished by his wife of 66 years, Ann Fairman Hayes; two daughters, Lynne Hayes Langley and Leigh M. Hayes; and two beloved grandsons, Phillip Hayes Langley and Michael Joseph Langley.

In addition, he will be remembered by six nieces, Mandi Hayes Kyle, Misti Hayes Assaley, Mekell Hayes Golden, Glenda Fleming Cribbs, Michelle Fairman Garlow and Amy Fairman. He is also survived by sisters-in-law De Etta Kay Hayes, Gene Fairman Fleming and Julia Fairman; as well as brother-in-law Donnel R. Fairman; and many, many friends.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, and until the 11 a.m. funeral service, with Pastor Steve Dunlap officiating, Wednesday, June 16, in Mariscotti Funeral Home, Inc., Anthony N. Mariscotti, Supervisor, 323 Fourth Street, California.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of his family.
