Donald L. “Roupe” Roupe, 87, of Warrendale, formerly of Greensburg and Bridgeport, W.Va., passed away Monday, March 29, 2021, in his home. He was born March 6, 1934, in Brave, to the late Robert Kenneth and Gail Lucille Rush Roupe.
Prior to retiring, Don was employed by Consolidated Gas Co. Don also worked, in his spare time, for several newspapers in North Central West Virginia, as a sports reporter for the Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram, Bridgeport News and Times-West Virginian in Fairmont, W.Va. He covered high school sports, college, both DI and DII, NAIA and the Pittsburgh Steelers, often attending Steelers Camp to get his stories. During his time from the late ’70s to mid ’90s, he came in contact with so many officials in his duties, and often noted that there was nothing but professional people doing good things for their schools. Don was also a member of the 17th Signal Battalion Association, an organization representing the 17th Signal Battalion and other Signal Corps veteran personnel who served in the Cold War. Don was the official photographer for the Association, and produced many Memory Books generated from the many photos at many different reunion sites. He officially served with the 102nd Signal Battalion, and was stationed at Battalion Headquarters, serving as chief clerk in Message Center near Mannheim, Germany, in the late ’50s. He also maintained a website of Deuce members for his group, maintaining contact with fellow Deuce and Signal Corps members.
He was a graduate of Waynesburg High School, Class of 1951. Don attended Salem College, graduating in 1976 with a computer science degree. Later, he served on the Waynesburg Reunion Committee and coordinated various reunion events for his classmates.
Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather (Pap), brother and friend. He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of 65 years, Myrna R. Holiman Roupe; daughter Cynthia Patrick (Michael) of Lost Creek, W.Va.; sons Jeffrey Roupe (Jennifer) of Pittsburgh and Shane Roupe (Angela) of Pittsburgh; brother, Lloyd W. Roupe of Waynesburg; and many friends. He was the very proud grandfather of Madison Maria Roupe, Julia Grace Roupe, Morgan Sophia Roupe, Jordan Faith Roupe and Nicholas Shane Roupe.
Family and friends will be received from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, April 2, in the Vaia Funeral Home, Inc., 463 Athena Drive, Delmont, 724-468-1177. Funeral services for Don will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, in the funeral home, with the Rev. Ron Raptosh of Faith United Methodist Church, Delmont, officiating. COVID-19 guidelines will apply.
