James D. Lewis Sr.
Reverend James D. Lewis Sr., 78, of Brewton, Ala., formerly of Clarksville, died Friday, May 7, 2021, in Sacred Heart Hospital, Pensacola, Fla.
James was born December 21, 1942, in Millsboro, a son of the late William M. and Elsie M. Bane Lewis.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Carol Howes Lewis (married July 6, 1963); five children, James D. Lewis Jr. (Diana) of Arkansas, Linda Lucille Lawry (James) of Brewton, who was his caregiver, Jeffrey L. Lewis (Sharon) of Clarksville, Timothy A. Lewis (Susan) of Millsboro and Christina Fisher of Ohio; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three siblings, George R. Lewis, Judith Ann Lightner and Kathy Jean Conley (Butch); several nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law Mary Anne and Dottie Lewis.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Harry Joseph in infancy, William F. “Bill”, Thomas Ronald Lewis; and sister Mary Ellen Howes; sister-in-law Doris Lewis; and brothers-in-law Donald Howes and Jack Lightner.
James graduated from Jefferson Morgan High School. He worked as a coal miner and machinist for Beth Energy Corp. He also served as a tax collector for Clarksville Borough.
James was called to be a United Methodist Minister later in life, and continued for 27 years as a pastor in churches at Fordyce, Mt. Pleasant and Point Marion.
In his spare time, he enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and working on old cars. He was a singer and guitarist for the group, The Gospelaires.
He lived a long, productive, faith-driven life.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a viewing of Reverend Lewis from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 14, and from 11 a.m. to noon, the time of a service, Saturday, May 15, with the Reverend Tim Tanner, officiating.
Burial will follow in Horne Cemetery, Marianna.
