Clara E. Harper

Clara E. Harper, 82, of Washington, passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2021.

She was born May 8, 1939, in Washington, a daughter of the late Robert L. Gatling, Sr. and Frances Dillard Gatling.

Clara was a 1957 graduate of Washington High School. She worked as a unit secretary at the Washington Hospital for over 30 years.

She was a lifelong member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Methodist Women of John Wesley Church. She was also a member of the Washington chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. and Senior Action Council.

Clara enjoyed gardening, reading, spending time with her family and friends, and volunteering in the community. She especially loved caring for her cats.

On November 28, 1970, she married the late Donald R. Harper.

She is survived by three daughters, Alicia Harper, Dawn (Michael) Hayes, both of Washington, and Carmen Harper, of Philadelphia; six grandchildren, Kirsten, Lauren (Robert), Cordell, Taylor, Misha, and Noah; three great-grandchildren, William, Salina, and Saraya; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Deceased are her grandparents, Louis and Romaine Dillard; a sister, Lois Gatling Calloway; a brother, Robert L. Gatling, Jr.; an aunt, Mildred Ivery; a nephew, John C. Heyman; and a niece, Phyllis Gatling Harris.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the time of service, Thursday, November 4, in the Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. All other services are private.
