Mary Ann Johnson
Mary Ann Johnson made a peaceful passage into eternal life on Tuesday, November 23, 2021. Born in Burgettstown on December 6, 1923, Mary Ann was the daughter of the late Dr. James L. Thome and Florence Kelso Thome.
She was the loving wife of the late Roger L. Johnson, whom she married in July 1946, at the Cross Roads United Presbyterian Church in Washington.
Surviving are her daughter, Emily (Grant) Minor; and son, Stephen (Lucy) Johnson; six grandchildren (Ben, Katie, Jimmy and William Minor, Melissa Carr, and Byron Johnson); and 11 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, James L. Thome III.
Mary Ann was raised in Oxford, Ohio, graduated college at Monmouth College in Monmouth Ill., and completed a Master’s degree in English at Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr. The granddaughter and daughter of Presbyterian ministers, she also was a life-long member of Presbyterian churches, serving the Lord and several churches faithfully and effectively in many roles over many years.
She taught high school English in Bay Village, Ohio and Great Valley, and college English at W&J College in Washington.
Mary Ann was an inquisitive, voracious reader, loved playing bridge with friends, enjoyed living in the country, and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who always was interested in the lives of her family and friends.
She will be missed by many and remembered lovingly by the family that benefitted so greatly from her life-lessons, generosity, example, and love.
Her life will be remembered at a memorial service at 4 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, at The Church of the Covenant in Washington.
A private interment ceremony will be held at the Emmanuel United Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Memorial Fund at The Church of the Covenant, 267 E. Beau Street, Washington.
