Dr. Howard Leonard Hausher, 91, of Brownsville (Malden), passed away peacefully, in his home, Thursday, November 25, 2021, surrounded by his family, prayers and lots of love.
He was born May 22, 1930, in Vestaburg, the youngest of six children of the late Dominic and Helen Ozelis Hausher Sr. He loved growing up in the coal patch with family and lots and friends. It’s where his love for gardening began and no matter where he lived there were always flowers for his wife, Margarette Buber Hausher and vegetables.
Dr. Howard was a 1948 graduate of East Bethlehem High School. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Waynesburg College, a Master’s degree from West Virginia University and a Doctorate degree from the University of Virginia, all in Math Education.
He was employed as a professor at California University, where he served as the chairman of the Math and Computer Science Department from 1967 to 1991. He authored “Math Expression” textbooks and was also the editor for Laidlaw Publishing Math Series.
Dr. Hausher served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. For his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
He was a lifelong member of St. Katharine Drexel Parish, Richeyville Campus, and a member of the Hanson-Cole American Legion Post #391, Fredericktown.
His love of football lead him to assistant coaching the Cal U. football team.
Surviving are a daughter, Georgiann McLellan of Malden; two grandchildren, Dr. Erin Lavigne (Matthew) of Cork, Ireland, and Katherine McLellan of Malden; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was the last of his immediate family.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Margarette Buber Hausher, who died in 2013; four sisters, Helen Segzda, Anne Mullin, Frances Pagac and Josephine Lemonovich; one brother, Dominic Hausher Jr.; son-in-law, Jack McLellan.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, in the John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, Ltd., 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where a prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 1, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Katharine Drexel Parish, Richeyville Campus at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Edward L. Yuhas officiating. Interment will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park. Full military rites will be accorded graveside by the Hanson-Cole American Legion Post #391, Fredericktown and the U.S. Marine Corps.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Hausher Novak Mathematics Award, California University Foundation, 250 University Avenue, Campus Box 112, California, PA 15419.
