William Gustav Shadel
William Gustav Shadel, born April 2, 1942, a son of the late Milo and Anna Sten Shadel, passed away Monday, September 20, 2021, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He was a graduate of Trinity High School, Class of 1960, and a member of First Lutheran Church. He worked for Jessop Steel/ATI for 42 years, before retiring in 2002. In his time at Jessop Steel/ATI, he was actively involved in Local Union 1141. He served in the Air National Guard Co B from 1963-1969.
He was the husband of Sandra Lackovich Shadel. They married October 8, 1966.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sandra; children, William Jr. (Nicole) of Peters Township, Kirk (Malin) of Beaver County and Laura Lock (Scott) of Ashburn, Va.
He was the proud grandfather (“PapPap”) of seven grandchildren, Mila and Gus Shadel, Stina, Anneli and Magdalena Shadel, and Christopher and Morgan Lock. He leaves behind his beloved sister, June Ann Jones; and many nieces and nephews. He loved his family very much.
Bill also loved music, especially jazz. He played tenor saxophone with many, many bands. He started playing professionally when he was just 16 and it was a life-long passion. Band highlights included lengthy stints with the Johnny Cimino Orchestra, the Patsy Cimino Combo, the Lee Barrett Big Band, the Larry Falvo Orchestra, Weekend Edition, and so many more. He had an uncanny ability to remember details of gigs and musicians from almost any time in his 60+ years of playing. He was known for doing a wonderful impersonation of Louis Armstrong, his favorite being “It’s A Wonderful World.”
He was an avid and passionate Steelers fan and also enjoyed golfing and bowling. He was a member of and had many friends at several clubs in the area including the Alpine Club, Arms Club, the Elks, and the former Jessop Club.
Bill was much loved and will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the time of service, Saturday, September 25, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Schott officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.
