William Hughey
William “Bill” Hughey, 82, of Washington, passed away peacefully, in his home, where he was surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday, August 24, 2022.
Born December 3, 1939, in Burgettstown, he was a son of the late Myron and Ora Hill Hughey.
Bill attended Burgettstown High School and proudly enlisted in the United States Navy to serve his country during the Beirut-Lebanon Crisis. He was a Seaman aboard the U.S.S. William R. Rush from 1957-1961.
He worked at Andy’s Tire Shop and spent many years working at Reliance Electric as a specialized welder, from which he retired in 2002.
Bill loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed working on cars in his garage and was especially skilled at welding, body work and repairing motors. There was nothing he couldn’t fix!
Bill loved watching Gunsmoke, reading the Farmer’s Almanac, and telling stories of his days in the Navy and sharing his knowledge and wisdom learned (sometimes the hard way) throughout the years. He loved fishing and camping at Pymatuning, and rooting for the Steelers.
Growing up, Bill attended Atlasburg Church of the Nazarene and, in his later years, he was affiliated with Windy Gap, EPC in West Finley.
He married his childhood sweetheart, the late Maxine Stiffler Hughey, on March 18, 1961. He was the proud father of Beth (Don) Mohr of West Finley, David (Denise) Hughey and Megan (Levi) Graham, both of Washington, and the late Danny (Mary) Hughey; brother of Barb Phillips of Burgettstown, and the late Raymond Hughey and Carol Beatty; cherished grandfather “Pap” of DJ (Jamie) Mohr, Heather (TJ) Gojmerac, Darla Hughey, Dany Smith and Eli Hughey; beloved great-grandfather “Pap Pap” of Raylan Grudi, Kassen and Piper Graham, and Gianna and Jocelyn Mohr. Bill is also survived by multiple nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to express deep gratitude to Amedysis Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate care throughout the past few weeks.
Friends and family are invited to pay their final respects from 1 to 3 p.m., with a funeral service immediately following visitation, Saturday, August 27, with Pastor Joe Rearick officiating in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Full military rites will be accorded at the funeral home by the United States Navy and Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
Interment will be private at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies at a later date.
