Nellie J. Barner
Nellie J. Barner, 99, of Washington, formerly of Dormont and Bradenton, Fla., passed away Monday, August 22, 2022.
She was born December 5, 1922, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late William and Nellie Lowen Schweitzer.
Nellie retired in 1972 as head of the Dairy Department after working 24 years at the Kroger Grocery Store in Banksville. She was the first woman to work as a department head manager.
While living in Bradenton, Nellie was a member of the River Isles Golf Association and volunteered at the First Presbyterian Church, where she helped prepare the newsletter.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, she is survived by nieces and nephews.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husbands, Edward G. Hellerman August 3, 1965, and Carl H. Barner November 26, 1997; five brothers, Richard, William, Donald, Warren and Jack Schweitzer; and two sisters, Dorothy Schrock and Helen Margareta Schweitzer, her baby sister.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 29, in the Beinhauer Funeral Home, 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, 724-941-3211, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 30. Interment will follow in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery.
