Robert Melvin Riggs
Robert Melvin Riggs, 79, of West Alexander, died Thursday, August 25, 2022, at 9:45 a.m., in The Washington Hospital, after being in failing health for the past several months.
He was born June 22, 1943, in Wheeling, W.Va., a son of the late Willard Melvin and Martha Brice Dunlap Riggs, and had resided in West Alexander most of his life.
Mr. Riggs was a member of the West Alexander Presbyterian Church, where he played the organ (self taught) for 30 years, following his late mother who played at the church for 50 years, and he also sang in the church choir.
He was a 1961 graduate of McGuffey High School.
Mr. Riggs was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served as an Airman (E-3) aboard the USS Shangri La.
He was employed as a stock clerk by the former Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, W.Va. for 24 years, was also a former employee of National Cash Register in Cambridge, Ohio and was last employed at the Wal-Mart in Washington and Triadelphia, W.Va, (The Highlands) for over 15 years.
Mr. Riggs enjoyed watching television and time with his family.
Surviving is a sister, Mary Jo (Robert) Koehler of Washington; three nephews, Jason (Tara) Koehler of Plum, Reverend David (Rev. Emily) Koehler of Falls Creek, and Mark (Katie) Koehler of Butler; seven nieces and 3 nephews.
Friends and family will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, in the West Alexander Presbyterian Church, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 1, 2022, with Reverend David and Reverend Emily Koehler co-officiating. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Kesterson-Rush Funeral Home LLC, Rogersville.
