John Albert Skariot, Sr.

John Albert Skariot, Sr., of Washington, passed away on December 2, 2022 in his home.

He was born February 10, 1932, in Washington, son of the late Anthony and Sophie Dukovich Skariot, who came to the United States from Zagreb, Croatia.

On June 8, 1957, John married Shelby Jean Kennedy, who passed away on May 3, 2007.

Surviving are a son, John A. (Frances) Skariot, Jr., of Avella; a daughter, Susan R. (Jeffrey) Raineri of Washington; five grandchildren, Anthony (Deana) Skariot, Nicholas (Brenna) Skariot, Alayne (Jeff) Munoz, Matthew Raineri, and Marissa Raineri; four great- grandchildren, Morgan Skariot, Connor Skariot, Noah Munoz and Charlie Munoz; two sisters, Jennie Seibert and Mildred Chesnic; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a daughter, Diana L. Garrett; a granddaughter, Samantha R. Raineri; and a great grandson, Hayden L. Skariot. Also deceased are two sisters, Mary Mavrich and Helen Kaskie; and four brothers, Frank, Steve, Thomas and Joe Skariot.

John graduated from Trinity High School in 1950.

John was a veteran of the United States Army, having served as a military policeman with the 61st MP Company in Japan during the Korean War. John was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Mr. Skariot was a retired mechanic for Beth Energy Mines, having worked at the Mine 60 portal in Eighty Four. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He also previously worked at Tygard Valley Glass Factory and Tri-State.

John was an active member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion in Washington, and he enjoyed spending time with his friends there.

In his younger years, John was an avid hunter, and still enjoyed fishing and spending time with his good friend John Costa. He enjoyed watching all sports, playing cards, and listening to country music. He loved his family, and enjoyed being pappy to his grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

John will be remembered as quick to laugh and smile, for his stories of growing up as a part of a large family on Goat Hill, and his willingness to help his family in any way, at any time.

There will be a Memorial Service for John at New Hope Church, 22 Cortez Drive, Washington, on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at 5 p.m., with Pastor Fran Skariot officiating. Guests are invited to start arriving at the church at 4:30 p.m., and joining the family for a dinner immediately following the service.

Burial with full military honors in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Post 175, or a charity of one’s choice.
