Jane Goddard
Mrs. Jane Goddard, of Washington, joined the love of her life in heaven Tuesday, February 8, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was born February 22, 1925, in Sebring, Ohio, a daughter of the late John Davis King Sr. and Mary Poorbaugh King.
She was a graduate of Sebring High School and Kent State University. Before she completed her degree, she began her teaching career early due to the teacher shortage during World War II. Jane later completed her education at California University. She spent her career as an elementary school teacher, primarily at Crossroads and Allison Park Elementary.
At just 20 years old, she boarded a train alone and traveled across the country to marry the late Luther “Lou” Goddard October 9, 1945, in San Luis Obispo, Calif., when he returned home from World War II. She loved to travel and, throughout her life, she and Lou spent their free time exploring the world, but their favorite spots were summers in Myrtle Beach, S.C., with their family and winters in Florida with friends.
Jane was a dedicated charter member of the Church of the Covenant in Washington, where she served as an elder and deacon as well as a volunteer with the church’s library. She was also an active member of the Presbyterian Women and Monday’s Readers Group.
The matriarch of the family, she is missed by her son, Jeff (Tami) Goddard of Hickory; and daughter, Judy (Dan) DiGiovanni of Washington; six grandchildren, Jodie (Bill) Bedillion, Cortney Jane (Johnny) Capo, Jeffrey (Tiffany) Goddard, Douglas (Courtney) DiGiovanni, Corey (Jennifer) DiGiovanni and Kerri Ann (Ty) Lacock. She was the beloved “Who-Who” to 15 great-grandchildren, Kierstin and Adriana Bedillion, Liliana and Giovanni Capo, Malyna, Luke and Leyton Goddard, Gabriella and Rocco DiGiovanni, Serafina, Dino and Jameson DiGiovanni, and Allie, Ivy and Ty Lacock. Her lessons and love live on in every member of the family.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John “Jack” Davis King Jr.
At the request of Jane, immediate services will be private. A public memorial service at The Church of the Covenant will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church of the Covenant, 267 East Beau Street, Washington, PA 15301.
