Gertrude Macanga Hodor
Gertrude Macanga Hodor passed away peacefully, in her sleep, Friday, February 11, 2022, at the age of 98.
A daughter of the late Anna Macanga and Martin Macanga of Meadowlands, she enjoyed a pleasant and full life growing up in Meadowlands.
One fateful evening at the Polish Club Wolfdale Picnic Pavillion, she met a handsome young man, Amil Stanley Hodor, of Washington. Gertie and Amil were married for 77 wonderful years. Amil passed away February 21, 2018, at the age of 97.
Surviving Gertie are her twins, Don (Geri) Hodor of Canonsburg / Southpointe, and Donna (Fred) Carl of Pickerington, Ohio.
Her son, Edward (Paula) Hodor, is deceased.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Jeffrey (Cindy) Hodor of Annapolis, Md.; Kellie (Mike) Hagerman of Canonsburg, and Christie (Chad) Dewitt of Annapolis, Shawn (Ashley) Carl of Columbus, Ohio, and Kristin (Justin) Kemp, also of Columbus; great-grandchildren, Brendan, Caden and Isabella Hagerman of Canonsburg, Marin and Channing Hodor of Annapolis, Kyla and Alina Kemp of Columbus, and Braxton Carl, also of Columbus.
Deceased family members are brother, Edward (Jenny) Macanga of Houston; sisters, Edna (Robert) Kowalski of Washington, Ann (Frank) Skowvron of Houston, Liz (JK) Kozdra of Meadowlands, and her twin sister, Florella Macanga (deceased in infancy).
Gertie was very active at Holy Trinity Church. She was a dedicated Sunday school teacher, never missing a Sunday for 10 years. She valued her church and community, volunteering her time organizing picnics, parties and children’s events. She and her friends would make and assemble perogies for hours, with the sales of the perogies benefitting her beloved church.
Outside of her church activities, Gertie was captain of her bowling team, founded the “Steele Street Card Club” (she was unbeatable at 500 Rum), and cherished her time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gertie is sadly missed by faithful and devoted caregivers, Bunny Miller, Toni Chadwick, Patty James and Peggy Williams.
Private services were held Tuesday, February 15, in Holy Trinity Church, Hewitt Avenue, Washington.
