Gaylord A. Sprowls
Gaylord A. “Cub” Sprowls, formerly of Washington, died Monday, July 11, 2022, in Atrium Hospital, Pineville, N.C., surrounded by his daughters. He was born October 25, 1938, in East Buffalo, one of 10 children of Glen and Sylvia Sprowls.
Cub was a 1956 graduate of Trinity High School. He went on to join the Marines and was honorably discharged in 1958.
He attended Carpenter Apprentice School and also attended the University of Pittsburgh Engineering School, received an Associate of Construction Management degree.
Cub worked locally as a superintendent on the building of the Washington & Jefferson dormitories, First Christian Church, and the Washington Mall along with other facilities. In the 1970s, he took a leap to join an international construction firm and traveled the remainder of his career to Indonesia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Croatia, Bulgaria, Sakhalin Island, Marshal Islands and Moscow. He was part of teams to build a nickel processing plant, King Khaled Airport, Air Force bases, major hotels and U.S. embassies.
In November 1957, he married his best friend, Judith L French Sprowls, who is now deceased.
Surviving are two daughters, Robin L. Sprowls of Fort Mill, S.C., and Noreen Sprowls Smutko (Kurt) of Charlotte, N.C. Also surviving are brother, Wayne Sprowls, and sister, Shirley Sprowls Chambers, both of Washington.
Deceased are parents, Glen and Sylvia Mounts Sprowls; and brothers, Glenn R., William and Donald; and sisters, Margurite Boyle, Laura McDowell, Edythe Schrader and JoAnn Martin.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, August 26, in East Buffalo Church. The placing of his ashes will follow the service at his family’s farm.
His daughters suggest memorial contributions be directed to Semper Fi and America’s Fund and/or the Humane Society of the United States.
