Hugh C. Kelly

Hugh C. Kelly, 86, of Avella, passed away on June 2, 2022 in Washington Hospital.

He was born on September 17, 1935 at home in Avella, PA, son of the late Charles and Mary Griffin Kelly.

Hugh was a 1953 graduate of Avella High School and was a Foreman for PennDOT for 25 years, retiring in 1990.

Prior to working for PennDOT, Hugh served as a police officer.

He was a member of St. Isidore the Farmer Parish (St. Michael Church) and Polar Star Mutual Benefit Society both of Avella.

Hughie was a lifelong resident of Avella and had lived on the Heights Hill since 1977, where he enjoyed his neighbors and keeping his lawn pristine. He loved to cook for his family and everyone looked forward to his famous sauce. He loved to spend time with his family, he enjoyed his many trips to Florida and was known for doing the Polka, even in his eighties.

He was very proud of the large family that he and Catherine created.

On April 4, 1956 in St. Michael Church, he married Catherine Mae Gabrielli, who passed away on June 29, 1996.

Surviving are his four children, Colleen (Jerry) Stefkovich of Avella, Corinne Sciurba of Washington, Colin (Judy) Kelly of Avella and Colette Kelly of Hollywood, FL; 10 grandchildren, Valerie (Jason) Lis, Beth (Dan) Dunmore, Adam (Alex) Stefkovich, John Sciurba, Angela (Joel) Zupancic, Gabriella (Ryan) Honaker, Ashley (Adam) Cummins, Kate (Robert) Silverthorn, Chris (Stacy) Kelly, Nick (Leah) Kelly; 17 great-grandchildren, Catherine, Peyton, Gabriel, Rylan, Kiersten, Colton, Fiona, Hudson, Adalee, Maddie, Ada, Darcy, Allie, Lena, Lucia, Alice, Jordan; and two more great-grandchildren being born this summer, Riley and Waylon; sister-in-law, Patty Kelly; numerous nieces and nephews; and his loyal canine companion, Kay.

He was the last of his immediate family; preceding him in death, in addition to his wife of 40 years and parents are, a grandson, Jacob Kelly; five brothers, Charles, Frank, Jack, James and Paul Kelly; three sisters Betty Pruss, Rita Kelly and Kathryn Bartolott; infant twin siblings; and a son-in-law, Tony Sciurba.

Friends and family will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, June 6, in the Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home Inc., 18 Campbell Street, Avella, PA 15312. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, in St. Michael Church, 97 Highland Ave. Avella, PA 15312, with Rev. Harry Bielewicz officiating.

He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife Catherine in St. Michael Cemetery, Avella.
