Fred Thomas Cario, 67, of Washington, a man that many referred to as “the smartest man I know,” died Monday, March 21, 2022, in his home.

He was born February 3, 1955, in Washington, the son of the late Richard Albert and Nancy Jean Waugh Cario.

Fred graduated from Immaculate Conception High School, where he wrestled.

He attended Immaculate Conception Church.

Fred became quite an entrepreneur. He opened Subs Unlimited at the age of 17 with his family. He went on to establish Cario Construction and his final endeavor, Oh So Tan. He was a master craftsman; his self-taught carpentry skills are displayed at businesses and homes throughout Washington and surrounding areas. His craftsmanship was simply unmatched.

He was a rescue diver with Washington County Search & Rescue, a private pilot, an avid wine maker and chef. He enjoyed clay shooting and was a certified instructor. He loved outdoor activities: fishing, hunting, duck hunting, camping, and traveling were his favorites. But more than anything, Fred loved his family.

Fred was a former member of the Jaycees and volunteered his time and talents throughout Washington.

On April 26, 1975, Fred married Gina Renee Spino, who survives.

Also surviving, are daughters, Amanda Coffman (Jason) of Washington, Lyndsay Evans (Chad), of Clifton, Va., and Lauran Tilden (Michael), of Firestone, Colo.; siblings, Cathleen Kenefick (Dean), of Washington, Albert Cario (Wanda) of Canonsburg; Joseph Cario (Laurie), of Natrona Heights, and Gina Anderson (Larry), of Washington; 13 grandchildren, Ava, Sydney, Benjamin, Brody, Cecilia, Xavier, Annalise, Francis, Amelia, Landry, August, Bernadette, and Ruth; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2022, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington.

A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 29th, in St. James Parish, Immaculate Conception Church, with Father John Lynam, celebrant.

Those wishing to attend the service should meet at the church Tuesday morning.
