Lawrence Henry Polen Sr., 88, of Burgettstown, died Tuesday, March 15, 2022, in Orlando Regional Medical Center, Florida. He was born July 31, 1933, in Wheeling, W.Va., a son of the late Craig Polen and Margaret Burris.
Lawrence served in the United States Army and then worked at Weirton Steel Mill as an electrician foreman. He retired in April 1983.
Besides his parents, preceding Lawrence in death was his wife, Gertrude Polen; son, Lawrence Polen Jr.; and son-in-law, Gary Reed.
Lawrence is survived by his loving, long-time companion, Patricia Smith; daughter, Noreen Reed; son, Michael (Robin) Polen; “adopted daughter”, Lori Calhoun; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lawrence also leaves behind a sister, Norma; and brothers, Robert and William.
Lawrence enjoyed spending time with family and working around the house. He continually kept himself busy, with yard work and home maintenance projects. Known to many as Larry, he had an extraordinary talent for woodworking that never ceased to amaze those around him. With only a picture or an idea in mind, he crafted things big and small with the finest of details and finishing touches. He was an incredibly gifted and admired woodworking artist.
More than anything, Lawrence / Larry loved helping others. He would do anything, for anyone. A “snowbird”, who traveled to Florida for the winters, he had friends far and wide who not just liked him – but utterly adored him. To so many, he was nothing short of an angel on earth.
A private service will be held for immediate family at a later date.
