George J. Berry
George J. Berry, M.D., of Sewickley, passed away Monday, October 31, 2022, in Heritage Valley Hospital, Sewickley, with family by his side.
A man of deep faith, commitment to family, church, and medicine, he is survived by his wife, Gloria G. Berry of Sewickley; sons, George J. Berry III (Kathy Hale) of Wexford and William G. Berry (Pam) of Peters Township; grandsons, William G. Jr. (Racheal) of South Fayette, Sean P. (Stephanie) of Huntersville, N.C., and Jeffrey R. of Peters Township. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Liam and Quinn of South Fayette.
Dr. Berry was born March 12, 1930, to Dr. and Mrs. George D. Berry of Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Dr. Berry was a second-generation physician to his father, who practiced medicine for over 50 years in Western New York.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Catherine Miklitsch of Lewiston, N.Y., and Ellen Berry of Buffalo, N.Y.
Additionally, he is survived by his brothers, Robert Berry (Shirlee), John Berry (Kathy); and sisters, Loretta Berry and Mary Beth Scalise; and many nieces and nephews.
After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame, he attended The Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, where, on Halloween of 1956 he met Gloria, who was a graduate student at Northwestern University. They were married in 1957 in St. James Parish in Sewickley.
After completing his residency at Western Psychiatric Institute, he enlisted in the Army and was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan.
Upon completion of his military service, Dr. Berry and his family returned to Sewickley, where he practiced psychiatry throughout Western Pennsylvania. He was on the staff of Sewickley Valley Hospital for nearly 30 years and maintained his private practice on Centennial Avenue until he retired in 1991. He also served as president of the Medical Staff.
He treated patients at a variety of facilities including The State Correctional Institute of Pittsburgh, Woodville State Hospital, Mayview State Hospital, Polk Institute, as well as Auberle Boys Home and Gilmary School for Girls.
He was active in St. James Roman Catholic Church serving as president for St. James first Parish Council. He and Gloria were members of The Edgeworth Club for 57 years.
Friends may be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 4, in Copeland Funeral Home, Ltd., Irvine Chapel, 702 Beaver Street, Sewickley, PA 15143. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 5, in St. James Church. Interment will follow in St. James Cemetery, Sewickley.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Divine Redeemer Church or Heritage Valley Sewickley Hospital.
