Sara R. Beckner
Sara R. “Pluchie” Beckner, 84, of Washington, died Wednesday, October 5, 2022, in her home.
She was born May 21, 1938, in Washington, a daughter of the late Walter Maryland, Sr. and Sara Brown Maryland.
Sara was a graduate of Trinity High School and worked as a C.N.A. at the Washington Hospital for a long time. She then worked at Sears and Macy’s at the Franklin Mall. She also studied through Harty Bible School.
Her family, children and grandchildren were, first and foremost, the center of her life. She also enjoyed being stylish with her wardrobe and was always known to dress very fashionably.
She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Washington; The Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World, where she was very active; the Western Star Temple #3, in McKeesport, where she served as Daughter Ruler and Chaplain, as well as the Alpha Council of Pittsburgh #1, again, serving as Chaplain. She was also a member of the Daughters of Pennsylvania State Association, where she served as historian and monitor.
On June 2, 1964, she married Milton Beckner, who died August 30, 2003.
Surviving is a son, Darryl J. Beckner of Washington; two daughters, Lynn Oakley and Sheila Beckner, both of Washington; eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased is a daughter, Davida Beckner; three brothers, Roosevelt Maryland, William Maryland and Walter “Sugar” Maryland, Jr.; and a sister, Dorothy Sanders.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 10, 2022, in the Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2022. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.
