Angelo Pankas
Angelo Pankas, 99, of Eighty Four, died Saturday, October 8, 2022.
Angelo Pankas lived a truly expansive life and was two weeks shy of his 100th birthday, when he was called away from this mortal coil.
Angelo was a first-generation American, as his parents immigrated here from Greece.
He served his country proudly, as a Corporal in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946, during active combat in World War II. His wartime stories from the European theater of operations awed and captivated his children and grandchildren.
Upon returning from the war, he began a career at the Canonsburg Transformer factory, from where he retired.
Shortly after beginning his career, Angelo met the love of his life, Mary. They were joined in holy matrimony June 27, 1950 and began a family together.
Angelo was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was always there to lend an ear about any troubles and dispensed sage advice.
Angelo was a true grillmaster, the spark of which began while working in his father’s butcher shop. You could find him every Easter on the front porch, spending hours in front of the specialized rotisserie grill, seasoning and cooking the souvlaki (grilled skewered lamb) to perfection. Angelo was a lover of fine cigars and playing his favorite dice game, craps, at the casino.
Angelo was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church. He was a member of a plethora of social clubs and fraternal organizations including the AHEPA, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Elks, and the Moose Lodge. No matter where he went in Washington County, whether it was the grocery store, the gas station, or out to eat at a restaurant, he would always run into someone he knew.
Angelo will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the countless others he interacted with and impacted across the past century.
Angelo was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Pankas; his mother and father, Maria and Miltiades Pankas; his brother, John (Harriet) Pankas; and his sister, Bessie (Chris) Pihiou.
Surviving are his love, Dolly Pardeau; his sister, Despina (Nick, deceased) Koutavas; his children, Vicky Pankas, Stephanie (Joseph) Komorowski, Angie (Michael) Ventrone, Milton (Janet) Pankas; his grandchildren, Steve (Amber) Grzanka, Michael Komorowski, Adam Komorowski, Mary (Jimmy) Comunale, Alex Pankas, and Kari (Brandon) Blossom; his great-grandchildren, Stephen, Bryce, Maggie, Liam, Lily, and Lydia; and many nieces and nephews.
