Jean McStea Phelan
Jean McStea Phelan, 93, joined the Church Triumphant on Saturday, October 8, 2022, with family by her side.
Jean Phelan was born January 23, 1930, the only child of Kathryn Perry McStea and David Woods McStea.
An avid learner and lifelong advocate of education, Jean graduated from Brentwood High School, Muskingum College (1951), and received her Master’s in Education from Penn State. Jean was active with the Kianu Sorority her whole life. Furthering her education, Jean became a licensed Dietician. Jeantaught at the Washington Hospital School of Nursing as well as working for WIC in Washington and Greene Counties.
Jean is predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Richard Winnett Phelan; as well as her youngest daughter, Barbara Jean Phelan.
Surviving are daughters: Kathy Phelan Wells Orr and Nancy Lynn Phelan; granddaughter, Anna Jo Phelan; sister-in-law, Laureen Warholick Lease; and nephew, Randolph Remac Phelan.
Jean was an active 65 year member of the Church of the Covenant, participating in various levels of the Church and Presbytery, as well as in Presbyterian Women.
Jean served on the board of Residential Recovery Services, now a part of ARC and was a member of the Current Events Club.
A celebration of life will be held at the Church of the Covenant, located at 267 East Beau Street, Washington, PA 15301, at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.
Visitation with family will be previous, from 2 to 4 p.m., and all are welcome to dinner following the service. Wheelchair accommodations are available.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Church of the Covenant, the Washington County Community Foundation or to the charity of one’s choice.
