Katherine Harvoth Carter, 98, formerly of Washington, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023, in Wickshire Senior Living in Poland, Ohio. Katherine was born July 14, 1924, in Burgettstown, as the youngest and seventh child of the late Julia Molnar Harvoth.

Katherine grew up in the Washington County Children’s Home, where her mother worked as a housekeeper. She graduated from Trinity High School in 1943, where she took courses in bookkeeping and typing. Following graduation, she built airplanes for the war effort in Cleveland.

After the War, Katherine returned to Washington, where she worked as a soda jerk and then a paint store clerk. She met her husband, Emory Carter, on the street outside of Peters Garage on her way to work.

Katherine and Emory married August 2, 1948. They made their home on Penn Avenue in Washington, where they lived for more than 70 years. In 1951, they welcomed their son, Robert. In 1956, they welcomed their daughter, Susan.

Katherine was an avid gardener, and, for years she canned garden-grown vegetables. She also enjoyed vacationing with her family in Myrtle Beach, where seashell collecting was a favorite activity. With her grandchildren, Katherine loved playing Parcheesi and CatchPhrase, although she was known for giving very confusing clues.

Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, Emory S. Carter; her son, Robert G. Carter; and her six siblings.

Katherine is survived by her daughter, Susan (Terry) Reffner; daughter-in-law, Margaret Carter; three grandchildren, Emily Carter, Alan (Erika) Carter, and Meredith (Mitchell) Collins; and one great-grandchild, Miles Carter.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation or services.
