John Michael “Red” Thur, 88, of Avella, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 25, 2023, in his home.

He was born August 25, 1934, in Avella, a son of the late Michael John and Helen Samborsky Thur.

Mr. Thur was a lifelong resident of Avella.

He graduated in 1953 from Avella High School and was a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in Avella.

Mr. Thur was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving aboard the troop ship, USS Cavalier, APA-37, as a boiler tender, in the Pacific and Northeast.

He was a member of Ironworkers Local 549 of Wheeling, W.Va., and was employed as an Ironworker for Local 549 of Wheeling for 30 years, retiring in October 1993.

Surviving Mr. Thur are three sisters, Susan Thur of Avella, Anna DiCola of Gibsonia and Helen Gault of Avella; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great- great-nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son, Michael Bowman; his fiancee, Barbara Bowman; a brother, Michael Thur; and a sister, Mary Fries.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 28, in the Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home Inc., 18 Campbell Street, Avella, PA 15312, where a blessing service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, with the Rev. David A. Perry Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Avella.
