Vincent James Camps, Jr., 95, of Washington passed away Friday in his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born August 29, 1928, in Washington a son of the late Vincent James, Sr. and Josephine Barrett Camps.

“Jim” attended Washington Schools during his youth and then enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17.

He served on the U.S.S. Kankakee during his military service where he witnessed the United States testing nuclear bombs in the Bikini Islands and the Atoll Islands.

Jim was a professional painter and member of the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades and was an agent for Painters Local 208. He was a member of the ISDA Alpine Lodge and the American Legion Post #175 in Washington. He coached midget football for 17 years, enjoyed fishing, annual Walleye fishing trips to Lake Erie, and traveling; especially to his ship’s reunions.

Following his retirement from the painter’s union he worked for General Cryogenics, Hummel and Barnhill Funeral Home and DeAngelo Funeral Homes.

On January 11, 1961, in Immaculate Conception Church in Washington, he married Blanche Cukczynski, who passed away on August 27, 2020.

Surviving are three children, Jack (Carol Glass) Camps of Washington, Thomas (Kandy) Camps of Washington and Jamie (Steven) Pratt of Washington; seven grandchildren Cecilia (Klint) Knox, whom he raised as his own, John Camps, Alaina (Ben) Zyra, Vincent (Kelly) Camps, Julia Camps, Christina Pratt and Erica Pratt; and four great-grandchildren; Sailor Knox, Hunter and Dakota Reedy and Reagan Camps.

Also surviving is a sister, Joann McClenathan; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death, in addition to his wife, by two sisters, Earla Brownlee and Mary Aldine Zullo.

Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 1, 2023, in Dale D. DeAngelo Funeral Home at 1290 Jefferson Avenue in Washington. At Jim’s request he will be cremated. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, November 6, 2023, in Immaculate Conception Church at 119 West Chestnut Street in Washington. Interment will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery with full military honors to be accorded by the United States Navy and the American Legion Post #175 Honor Guard.
