George M. Hanes
George M. Hanes, 79, of Mars, formerly Claysville, passed away Thursday, September 28, 2023, in St. John Specialty Care Center, Mars.
He was born March 20, 1944, in Bradford, a son of the late Lyle and Ella Raver Hanes.
Mr. Hanes was a 1962 graduate of Bradford High School, received his Bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., in 1966, and his Masters in Chemistry from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y., in 1968.
George was a chemistry teacher at Chartiers-Houston High School from 1968 until 1979 and was PSEA Uniserv Representative for 25 years.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Washington, where he had served as an Elder and former member of the Taylorstown Christian Church, where he served as chairman of the board and treasurer.
Mr. Hanes was a member of Chartiers Lodge #297 F & AM and the Pittsburgh Consistory. He was a former member of the Canonsburg-Houston Rotary and served on the Board of Directors for the Thomas Campbell Apartments in Washington.
George enjoyed photography, traveling and gardening.
On December 22, 1988, he married Patricia Cochrane who survives.
Also surviving are a sister, Mary Ann Allen (Martin) of Green Valley, Ariz.; three stepchildren: Patricia Tomazin (Joseph) of Samsula, Fla., Dr. Teresa Mae Allen, Captain, USN (Nikolai Kerry) of Washington, DC and Arthur Reeg Allen III (Jennifer) of Mars; eight step-grandchildren: Jewel, Joey, Jillian and Jenna Tomazin, Helen Kerry and Lana, Emma and Arthur Reeg “RJ” Allen IV.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, Owner / Supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 2, 2023. Interment will follow in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Camp Laurelview, 384 SR 3031, Rockwood, PA 15557.
