Back in the last century, unions did a lot to gain decent wages, benefits and safe working conditions for men and women in the labor force.

However, some unions today are safe havens for incompetence and laziness.

For instance, an aide who is a member of a union at one nursing facility worked the system and was assigned to a choice ward where she racked up a lot of overtime.

According to a co-worker, the aide did a good job when she worked, but she spent most of her time on breaks. Those breaks were devoted to watching TV, spending time on the telephone and selling candy and crafts, among other things.

Complaints to the front office brought little response. Administrators were apparently wary of union power.
