Canonsburg gets an occasional moment in the national spotlight, mostly on the strength of its musical native sons Perry Como and Bobby Vinton and, more recently, the pop music hall of fame that will eventually be located in the borough.Last week, though, it was the kerfuffle over the chairs that line Pike Street just before the Fourth of July parade every year that put Canonsburg before an audience between New York and Los Angeles and beyond. In a page one feature last Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal looked at the history of chairs being placed along the boulevard before the parade, the decision by council this summer to limit the placement of the chairs until the day of the parade, the backlash that followed and the compromise that will allow the chairs to come out 48 hours before the marching bands and floats proceed down the street. The article, by reporter Clare Ansberry, also pointed out other towns, including Latrobe and Arlington Heights, Va., have had similar controversies surrounding their parades and eager residents trying to reserve spots to watch them. It’s worth grabbing a chair and reading.
