Schools aren’t always the best places to look for intelligence, or common sense.

We often read about the ridiculous lengths schools go to in an effort to adhere to their “zero tolerance” policies. Kids have been booted out of school on “weapons charges” for things like bringing rifle-toting little green Army men to the classroom or carrying a plastic butter knife to spread jam on a muffin at lunch.

Now, we have the case of young Hunter Yelton of Canon City, Colo. The 6-year-old was suspended from first grade for “sexual harassment” because he laid a smooch on the hand of a girl of whom he was enamored.

Understandably, Hunter’s mother, Jenny Saunders, was poleaxed by the punishment, and by the allegation that her boy is some sort of sex offender.

Said Saunders, “This is taking it to an extreme that doesn’t need to be met with a 6-year-old. Now my son is asking questions … ‘What is sex, Mommy?’ That should not ever be said, sex, not in a sentence with a 6-year-old.”

For the record, Saunders said the girl in question had no problem with the kiss on the hand. She admits Hunter can be a handful, having been suspended before for “roughhousing” and giving the same girl a peck on the cheek.

The school district’s superintendent told a local radio station the district isn’t backing away from how it categorized the “incident.”

Lord knows what would have happened had Hunter summoned the courage to plant one on the girl’s lips. A tiny little electric chair, maybe?
