Seniority is best in layoffs

With regards to your Dec. 10 editorial, “Teacher performance should count in layoffs,” I think it would be a wonderful idea if we apply it as a means for job evaluations universally.

For example, if a newspaper is losing subscribers, perhaps the publisher or editor should be dismissed, instead of laying off writers. If there is no decrease in crime, the police chief should be fired. It appears that layoff policies based on seniority are bad when used for teachers. But in others areas, it is not?

How many times have you seen the big boss fired, or even managers? Seniority is the best and only fair way to evaluate any teacher. It the only way to eliminate subjectivity, a quality that, sadly, is not eliminated in other job dismissals.
