On the Greene River Trail in Rices Landing, there is a wonderful iron sculpture of a trail walker greeting all those who walk and bike along.

The sculpture was a 2007 Eagle Scout project by Hans Lubich which the county erected for the enjoyment of the public. I noticed recently that someone had used yellow chalk to draw eyes, a nose and ears on it, evidentally in an attempt to be funny.

Why some people believe it’s their right to deface public and private property, I will never understand. As a member of the public, I apologize to Mr. Lubich and assure him that those of us who use the trail appreciate his art which cannot be diminished by such childish actions.
