While watching the Super Bowl last month, I was stunned to see a commercial with a Toyota Tundra pulling the Space Shuttle Endeavour to retirement. The space shuttle is a symbol of American ingenuity and progress and, there it was, being pulled by a foreign-made truck. To me, this was a disgrace to the American people, especially the workers at U.S.-based automakers.

While the front bumper of the Tundra was emblazoned with “Born in America,” we all know that the profits from Toyota sales go back to Japan, where the company is based. Seventy years ago we were at war with that nation. Have we forgotten the injustice brought on our nation on Dec. 7, 1941 and the war that followed, which cost so many American lives? I wonder how veterans of that war who are still alive today felt about seeing that commercial.

A better commercial would have shown a vehicle manufactured by a U.S.-based automaker pulling Endeavour to retirement. That would have been a commercial the American people can be proud of.
