My husband and I like to travel, mostly in our RV, and we have traveled as far north as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, south to Florida, along much of the East Coast and as far west as Utah.

We do not need to see the “Welcome to Pennsylvania” signs upon our return. The abundance of trash along the roads makes it quite apparent we entered the state.

We can tell you that we do not encounter roadsides anywhere in our travels in such deplorable condition as those in the Interstate 70/79 corridors. We all become so accustomed to the litter that we do not even see it anymore until you leave the state and return, then it really hits you. Take a look on your next trip on these roads.

Sooner or later, something has to be done. What are our leaders waiting for? Other states have workers clean the highways. Why can’t we? Much of this debris, cans and bottles particularly, has a lifespan of hundreds of years. At the very least, we need a campaign to bring this to everyone’s attention. It is an embarrassment that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. It is not going to get better on its own.
