I am writing this letter in response to the March 10 letter from Mal Morris, “God loathes gay marriage.”

Let me first state that while I respect the First Amendment, as well as every person’s right to an opinion, I find the letter to be offensive and lacking information on the term “abomination” as found in the Bible.

The word itself, “abomination” is found 67 times in the Bible. Twice in the New Testament and the rest in the Old Testament. And while the verses cited by the writer found in Leviticus do pertain to a man laying with another man, a number of other things that God loathes are left out, including but not limited to women wearing garments that pertain to a man, as found in Deuteronomy 22:5, and a lengthy list of dietary abominations including eating fish that do not have scales or fins, this information being found in Leviticus 11:10-19. And I am sure the writer doesn’t think twice when seeing a woman dressed in pants enjoying dinner at Red Lobster.

My question is, why are some rules and laws as outlined by the Bible taken so literally, while others are for some reason forgotten? As far as I am concerned, the Bible teaches that one sin is not greater than another, and once the ultimate sacrifice was made, all could be forgiven if they seek Him. With that said, the overall message of the Bible is love and forgiveness, not fire and brimstone. So why in the 21st Century, where we can eat shellfish, wear pants, and do not have to sacrifice a living creature to ensure our place in paradise, are we still trying to tell people who they can and cannot love, and have a family with? It’s not our place as a society to tell decent human beings how to love. And frankly, its an abomination to do so.
