March is colorectal cancer awareness month. The good news is that colon cancer is preventable through early screenings. Early detection and treatment leads to cure. If everyone age 50 years and older had a screening test, as many as 60 percent of the deaths from colon cancer would be prevented. This would decrease unnecessary patient suffering and health care costs through decreased hospital admissions, surgeries, and cancer treatments.

I strongly support screening. It is an easy way to prevent colon cancer. Everyone needs to take control of their own health care. Know your risk factors, and change your lifestyle to decrease your risks for developing colon cancer.
