The greatness of this country is based in large part on the freedom given by those who fought for it. On Veterans Day, I attended the service for veterans, troops and first-responders at the First United Methodist Church. This was the 12th year I did so.

This is not a program promoting politicians, religion or where to shop. This is a program created by a veteran, Chuck Kolsosky, and several volunteers who want only to say thank you to men and women who work side by side daily and allow us to enjoy our freedoms.

I write this to say if you have not attended this one-hour program, please mark it on your calendar for Veterans Day in 2014. I am a senior citizen in the winter of my life. My grandfather, father, brother, four uncles and my niece gave years to the service of our country. An uncle gave his life as a flight surgeon. They, and others like them, are the reason I enjoy my freedoms as an American. God has blessed us.
