Where is tuition money going?

In response to your Wednesday editorial, “Pay adjunct faculty a decent salary,” I agree that more needs to be done by these colleges and universities that employ them. How can these schools justify their high tuition costs when they are paying their adjuncts, which at some of these institutions make up nearly half of their faculty, only $3,000?

That means that the tuition of one or two students in their classes is paying their salary. Where is the tuition for all of the other students going? I realize that these schools have facilities to maintain, but in a very small class of, say, 20 students, that means that there is anywhere from $27,000 to $54,000 going to pay for these facilities.

I believe that the widespread use of adjuncts and their treatment has been a secret that higher education has been hiding for some time now. Hopefully, with the story of the treatment of Margaret Mary Vojtko at Duquesne University, the public will be enlightened about this practice and start asking questions of their local colleges and universities, especially when they will be asking for an increase in tuition.
