Change the mascot, not the team’s name

The owner of the Washington Redskins has come under increasing pressure to change the name of his National Football League franchise. After all the nonsense that has happened in the nation’s capital lately, “Washington” may be an offensive term to many, but it is “Redskins” that is causing all the heat.
Unlike other team names associated with Native Americans – Indians, Braves and Seminoles, for example – “redskin” is considered by many to be a racial slur. It would be unthinkable, say those who protest, to name a team the Denver Darkies or the Waco Wetbacks, so how can Redskins be appropriate?
We have a solution to this problem that will preserve the team’s nickname while eliminating the offense: Keep the name but change the mascot.
In place of the profile of a proud warrior on the team’s logo, insert the image of the small, thin redskin potato (delicious when roasted with a little olive oil and fresh rosemary!).
If the thought of rabid football fans rooting on their team with cheers of “Go Taters!” is not to your taste, team owner Dan Snyder has yet another option: the redskin peanut. We can picture Mr. Peanut, with his top hat, monocole and cane, running up and down the sidelines, whipping the crowd into frothy frenzy. We can almost hear it now …
“GO NUTS! GO NUTS!”
