One of the last places we would expect to hear about a bountiful harvest would be a public library in Carmichaels.

But that’s where one occurred this summer, at Flenniken Library, where tomatoes, peppers and more were harvested.

Having a community garden at the library also turned out to be a learning experience for those who came for story hours and summer reading programs and stayed to plant, tend and harvest. The vegetables were started by Carmichaels Service Learning students, and the children who came to the library helped plant them.

After school let out in June, the library teamed up with the summer food program that is offered free throughout the county to children attending Greene County Parks and Recreation camps, library programs and other designated sites during June and July.

Isn’t it amazing what you can learn at a library even without opening a book?
