While some people might view new security measures at the Greene County Courthouse as an inconvenience, we wholeheartedly endorse the decision to have metal detectors and X-ray machines staffed every working day at two entrances to the building.

Prior to the implementation of these full-time measures, security details were put in place only for high-profile trials. We share Sheriff Brian Tennant’s conclusion that something is just as likely to happen at a Family Court proceeding as during a high-profile murder trial.

Under these new measures, people can enter the courthouse only through the front entrance and the Church Street entrance. The door on the Washington Street side of the building is locked, though, at least for now, people can still exit through the door.

Having everyone who enters the courthouse screened should provide court and county personnel with a sense of security, knowing it is unlikely anyone walking through the halls, riding an elevator or sitting in a courtroom is armed with a gun, knife or anything else that can be used as a weapon.

Of course, this does not mean sheriff’s deputies should no longer be present in courtrooms, or that employees and the general public should no longer be vigilant.

No amount of security guarantees 100 percent safety. The unexpected can always occur, but we believe these measures significantly reduce that chance.
