It was sad to read the Associated Press story in Friday’s Observer-Reporter about the Salt Lake City school that took students’ food and threw it away. Since they had outstanding balances on their food accounts, they could not eat.

Is this another case of the haves against the have-nots? Have we become so immune to the poor, elderly, disabled and sick that we will deny them food? Or maybe they will just go away as some people talk on their $300 phones. Shame on any of us who think that way.

They want us to believe these things are not too common, but we read about them all too often anymore. And truth be known, so many people are only a few paychecks away from poverty. The gap keeps getting larger, and those at the top love it.
