Brian Tennant has hit the ground running since taking office as sheriff of Greene County.
Last week, he issued an activity report for January, something we never saw in the 24 years his predecessor held the office.
Now, it’s not particularly scintillating reading, because the job of the sheriff just isn’t that scintillating to begin with.
But we commend Tennant for compiling the report, and we should expect to see a similar one issued for activities during February.
What this report does, in the simplest sense, is offer accountability, not that Tennant’s accountability is or has been challenged. What this report does is let the public know that he and his deputies are doing what the state statute requires them to do.
For instance, we learned his office processed 80 civil actions and served 44 documents related to those actions. The office processed 11 protection-from-abuse orders and also processed 82 licenses to carry concealed weapons.
The office transported three inmates for out-of-state extraditions and 23 inmates for appearances in Greene County Court.
Finally, the office checked on the welfare of one elderly resident and attended to three child custody disputes. Mileage traveled by deputies during the month was 4,587.
It’s unlikely we will be commenting on future monthly reports, unless, of course, he decides not to issue them.
