“Footloose,” the now 30-year-old movie musical about hip kids besting the squares and their aversion to popular music and “suggestive” dancing, has since been made into a stage show and remade for the screen, which, let us assure you, makes everyone who grew up in the first blush of MTV’s youth feel exceedingly elderly.

If some Hollywood executive is angling to craft “Footloose, Part II,” they should look no further than Peters Township High School. A dance there Feb. 8 was brought to an early conclusion after chaperones were left aghast by widespread “twerking,” the provocative dance brought into the spotlight last year by Miley Cyrus.

Peters Township School Board member William Merrell, who witnessed the spectacle, suggested last week that students should be offered dance lessons and went so far as to contact a nearby Arthur Murray Dance Studio to check on classes. Apparently, he believes that mastering the fox trot or waltz would turn students away from twerking and help them acquire “social graces.”

But even if they demanded female students wear poodle skirts and they piped in Perry Como music, high school students would still look for ways to raise their elders’ eyebrows. Don’t worry, twerking or not, today’s Peters Township High School students will find their way into marriage, jobs and have children of their own, and those children will find some way to outrage them.
