Once again, someone dropped off a cat on my property. It cried at my kitchen door, but when I opened the door, it ran off into the zero-degree darkness. The next morning, I found it frozen to death on my front porch.

If you don’t really want a cat, if you don’t really understand what it takes to take care of a cat, if you don’t understand that having a cat can involve a commitment of 15 or more years to that animal’s care, then don’t get a cat. The cat is your responsibility, not your kids, your parents, your friends, your neighbors, or mine.

Now is the best time of year to help solve this problem. Cats should be spayed or neutered as soon as possible. Most female cats are pregnant by early spring. The gestation period for a cat is 65 days. That gives you two months to get your cat fixed before you wind up with six more to take care of.

Let’s all work to stop this ridiculous and preventable inhumanity.
