Southeastern Greene lacks leaders

We fully understand William Henderson’s decision to leave Southeastern Greene School District for another position.

The job of superintendent is not an easy one. He or she must deal not only with administrative issues, but be able to get along with a board of nine different personalities. We are not suggesting there were conflicts, but it seems to us there is a regular turnover of leadership in the district.

Four years is about the average tenure at Southeastern. Henderson’s predecessor, Michael Caruso, was there three years, and before Caruso, Philip Savini was superintendent for slightly more than four years.

Henderson took the head administrator’s job at Frazier School District, having taught there earlier in his career, and the district is much closer to his home in Charleroi, a 20-minute commute to Perryopolis compared to a 50-minute commute to Mapletown.

He said being able to serve as superintendent of a district with almost twice the number of students as Southeastern Greene is a “professional opportunity” he could not let pass.

We think Henderson did a good job at Southeastern and wish him well in his new post. But we think consistency and stability are paramount to a district’s success, and we hope the board and the next superintendent agree.
